Politicians want to separate state and religion not on grounds of principle but on personal power. Man naturally wants to sin, wants to create laws that allow for sin. To keep religion from politics is liar's way of controlling all things. Which is why what Scalia said is so important -- important enough for believers to take a stand. My morals and those of my community should NOT be decided upon by robed figures with no knowledge of the Lord. Their right and wrong is from liar. To give in to their line of reasoning is to give in to the howlers. The eternal questions won't be decided upon before a court, but before a throne.
